New film’s blogger and manager, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess games, to have mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked during the local casino and you will old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely regulated gestures out-of like and you may risk, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can fashionably assertive images (in addition to his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle an invisible classic of your own category.” [ ten ]

Evelyn Keyes performs the nice little lady which brings forth this new best in your and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen exactly who gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily just like the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a unique able journey just like the an exhausted cops inspector who in the end shuts the fact. A lot of drinking and puffing is accomplished by the all the worried.” [ twelve ]
